OEM vs Racing CDI: Which One Does Your Motorcycle Need?
Buy an OEM CDI to replace a faulty unit and get your bike running like stock again. Buy a racing CDI only if you want to lift the rev limit for performance — and you understand the trade-offs.
The CDI is one of the most replaced parts in our store, and also one of the most misunderstood. Riders often ask for a "racing CDI" when what they actually need is a simple replacement — or order an OEM unit when they were really chasing more power.
This guide clears it up so you order the right box the first time.
What a CDI does
CDI stands for Capacitor Discharge Ignition. It is the small black box — usually tucked under the seat or inside the frame — that decides when the spark plug fires and how strong that spark is. Think of it as the timing brain of your ignition system.
When a CDI fails, the symptoms are hard to miss: the bike stalls, refuses to start, or runs with a weak, missing spark.
Newer FI models like the Nmax, Aerox, PCX and Click manage ignition through the ECU rather than a standalone CDI. If you ride a fuel-injected bike, check whether your model uses a CDI or an ECU before ordering.
The OEM CDI: restore, don't change
An OEM (original-spec) CDI uses the factory ignition curve. You buy one when your original unit is damaged and you simply want the bike back to how it left the showroom.
Choose an OEM CDI when you:
- Are fixing a stalling, no-spark or weak-ignition problem
- Want a reliable, plug-and-play replacement matched to your model
- Ride a stock engine and are not chasing extra performance
The racing CDI: more rev, more responsibility
A racing CDI changes the rules. The two things it typically does:
- Removes the factory rev limiter, allowing the engine to spin higher than stock.
- Runs a more aggressive timing curve. Many units are "dualband" — a switch lets you toggle between two ignition maps, for example a milder everyday map and a sharper performance map.
A racing CDI makes the most sense as part of a wider tune — alongside CVT work, intake or exhaust changes — rather than as a single bolt-on miracle.
Lifting the rev limiter puts extra stress on the engine and is best suited to closed-course or off-road use. Always check your local traffic regulations before fitting a performance ignition part to a street bike.

The golden rule: it must match your bike
Whether OEM or racing, a CDI is model-specific. The connector pin count and the ignition logic differ between a carburetted bike and a fuel-injected one, and between models. A CDI made for a Raider will not simply work on a Mio.
